Travelling With Your Pet

On the Road Again

On the Road Again With Man's Best Friend: United States

Dawn Habgood, Robert Habgood (Contributor), Glynn Grannan (Illustrator)
Dawbert Press

After spending fifteen years visiting and writing about thousands of bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, and resorts for their critically acclaimed regional series On the Road Again with Mans Best Friend. Dawn and Robert Habgood, have used their expertise to write their first national, pet-oriented travel guide. With over 16,000 accommodations from mom-and-pop motels and B&Bs to expansive resorts and luxurious hotels you will always find an array of intriguing places to stay with your favorite canine or feline. These are not bare bone lists. In fact, each entry includes the name, address, telephone number, and web site address (when available), along with number of rooms and corresponding rates. "Pet Policies" give pet fees, pet size and weight limitations, as well as any pet amenities that are provided. "Creature Comforts" outline the establishments amenities and include an array of features ranging from VCRs, Jacuzzis, and wet bars to on-site restaurants, health clubs, and pools. Their special logo indicates the finest and most unique whether it be a gracious Southern mansion, a Western dude ranch, a five-star resort, or an intimate seaside bed and breakfast. The Habgoods were very selective, highlighting only those that they personally visited or that received multiple reader recommendations. The section, "Not All Rooms are Created Equal," provides the inside scoop on how to reserve the best rooms and questions to ask to make sure that you dont get shuffled into undesirable rooms because you are traveling with a pet. "Money Matters" give advice on how to find discounted room rates, as well as some of the hidden aspects of pet fees and deposits. This is an amazing resource!

Take Your Pet Too

Take Your Pet Too! : Fun Things to Do!

Heather MacLean Walters
MCE

Every summer it's the same old problem--what to do with your canine or feline companion while you go on vacation. Especially useful for dog owners (since dogs generally take to the road with more of a holiday spirit than cats), Heather Walters's guide is a great pet travel resource. She covers all the basics--getting your pet ready for travel, travel by air and by road--plus extremely useful suggestions regarding health and cleanliness, barking and aggressiveness, ticks and stress. But that's all preliminary stuff. The heart of Walters's guide focuses not only on hotels across the U.S. that accept pets, but includes the festivals, museums, concerts, black-tie galas, and fairs that likewise welcome them. There's also a brief section on British Columbia and a resource guide to hundreds of pet-related items. It's a remarkable service, helping you plan a trip the whole family can enjoy together, without leaving Fido howling his loneliness while you gallivant off.

Novels and Other Interesting Reading

Out of Harm's Way

Out of Harm's Way

Terri Crisp and Samantha Glen
Pocket Books

Terri Crisp is nationally known for her work in rescuing animals, from natural disasters. This autobiographical work is both tragic and heartwarming. It tells of the many natural disasters that Terri, and the growing group of volunteers, have been through in attempting to save the many animals that are trapped or often left behind. It combines the losses with the great recovery stories and will move you to tears. Each event goes into detail of the many volunteeres and animal sytories. You get a sense for what this difficult, but necessary, work must be like. In addition, the Appendices provide lots of useful information on getting you and your own pets prepared for disasters, volunteer opportunities with EARS and other groups,as well as the ways that humane societies can prepare for future disasters, which is something many are not doing anything about. I read this book while on vacation and could not put it down. When I came home, I immediately signed up with EARS to train as a disaster volunteer. I highly recommend this book!

Pack of Two

Pack of Two; the Intricate Bond Between People and Dogs

Caroline Knapp
The Dial Press

I love the way Ms. Knapp writes. It's straight from the heart, no inhibitions, just raw emotion and perception. This woman has overcome many challenges. When she wrote this book, she had started down the road of sobriety with a new addition to her life, a sweet dog named Lucille. She talks about how Lucille helped her heal and come to know herself better. An incredible testimony and an enticing read.

Roger Caras

Recognize the name? That's right, the former director of the ASPCA put this collection of stories out in 1989. I still enjoy reading it from time-to-time. It reminds one of the fascinating and humorous world of the cat. Through biology, psychology and personal anecdotes, Mr. Caras shows us how cats view the world around them and people in it. It's very entertaining and insightful.
